Dry Zone Re-visitations

The Dry Zone isn't flat.

There are infinite stretches
of green
or gold
or brown
in the seasonality of paddy,
but at the end
a line of trees
and a horizonal hump.

There are rocks
not like Ritigala
not all of them
but of height enough
and from there
where ancient temples keep
their pothgul secrets;
these rocks which I've climbed
and sat on butt-burning seats
of midday lunacy
from there
the universe unraveled
too vast for thought to fill
too small to hold my small-mind
so I set free eyes and thought
and in the blind mindlessness
noticed shrub carrying remnant
of kemmura chant
and the imminent arrival
that will forever banish vacancy.
It took a while
a few centuries in fact;
but the rock cooled
eyes and mind returned
from exile and illumination.
I can die now.

The drivers' room

There's no one here now,
12.43 pm on Saturdays
is an out-of-bound story
and out of character too,
just the illusion of coolness
spun by a fan rebelling
against asbestos heat,
bunk beds stained with careless tea
men-less shirts
in suicidal suspense
broomless floors
lost matchsticks and ash
an office, nevertheless
and I
driver of an editor's car
member of a union
of three
wander on roads
armed with highway code
shoo away the pedestrian
make way for a moment
locked in amber
abandon work
and submit
to blessed slumber.

The wrecking and wreckage of words

There were words
so many in so many ways configured
tapestries and nondescript doormats
love notes and excuses.
There were words,always
and I never asked who made them
I never asked
why they never asked permission;
they came, stayed, marked
erased and left.
I didn't ask where or why
and didn't follow
not into gutter and drain
not into cloud or river.
There were words then
and they camouflaged of silence
shielded solitude.
But now
each word I send reveals
in reading and in the unclothing.
I should freeze in the cold sun
of exposures unfamiliar.
It's warm
in the un-wording
and the irrelevancing of text.

Flight of the shadow grain

When questions generate questions
in a back-forth of metaphor
where grain is planted in light
watered by shadow
and the harvest threshed
in and with silence
a heart cannot but break
and in the freedom of fracture
fly.

At the intersection of insomnias

There are wild swans
that shape forests and lakes
tiptoeing that offers interlude
to birdsong and conversation-drip
from leaf and sky,
a kalagediya and solitude;
there's a knife being cut by heart
words that are overtaken by words
a stumbling more firm
than stride and stop sign;
and tonight
as cut-glass and blood
sack-cloth humility
and the crossing of ash
a Franciscan at your door
arrived
to wait
for the collapse of centuries
and the proscription of words.
