FINGERNAILS 1

The most delicate blades
of impoverishment
the heart's last-gasp utterer
of all the words that won't get said
all the hurt that will not heal
the whisper
of a love as thick as anger
or thicker still
thick beyond memory
and so resolved to die
in the poverty-stricken body-edge
that says so much
and nothing.

No*

The reverse of yes-embroidery
the affirmation by silence
rejection by word
the answer of the confused
as valid
as articulate
as futile
as 'yes',
the underside of 'no',
Siamese word-twin
issue of the immemorial union
of ignorance and arrogance.

[Response to Himali Liyanage's request in a give-me-a-word-and-i-give-poem exercise]

Alexander

You are every child
on every beach
every sand-damp boundary
that came and went
every black-white rendition
that held the entire spectrum
every still photograph
that moved.

FAITH NODES

Pierce and bind
a tug-release dance
a roll-over
and over again
pin-point to pin-point
affirmation
testimony of belief
where devout submits
without flinch
and witness wonders
winces at perceived pain,
where primary colour
plays with primary element
the timeless tale
of human frailty
and endless drawing
from the unlimited
and untimate treasury:
faith.
