Death Notice












Every character scripted in
the kings, queens and ghosts
the jester and the prince
the pothe gura and the purohitha
clothed in wit and meaning
comment and critique 
armed with song and slogan
literary allusion 
and flipping of text,
they were there
on the street
in the street
with and for the street:
and every line and lyric
gesture and glance
and all the props and make-up
that turned player into audience
made street stage and stage street
float like ghosts behind a king and citizen
teacher and student 
it is the unscripted theatre moment
the mortalizing of the immortal,
the flight of he who never would flee,
the cremation of he who would not die.

Ode to garments

For the blurring of line
melting of infinities
explosion of impossibility
there’s an unclothing-prerequisite.
The seen and touched
thus drop to footnote
in a flesh-flesh tale
but love and loving
are soil and seed
for garments
of other spin
leaf and petal and thorn
weaver their other-decencies
by and by.

The Republic of Faith

The omnipresent is touched
in the caressing of cross
fingering of beads
waving of flag
kissing of a ring
and offering forehead
for Papal lip.
The omnipresent is touched
when divinity is drawn
from its other habitations
heart and mind,
thought and act
in matter and spirit
the affirmation
of more abiding covenents
in the savior’s word
in the before and after
of all Jerusalems
in the beyond
of all resurrection.

Twenty Fifteen here we come

Today we begin
all over again
refreshed, re-faced
re-born from fire
celebrating in light
clothed in rainbows
lubricated too
in the relevant commerce
the ganu-denu
of this
this other New Year
as ours as any.

සර්වසුභවාදියා

කුඩා කල ඔහු 
මැස්සන්ගේ පිහාටු කඩා දැමුවේ නැත,
බළලුන්ගේ නැටි වලට ටින් ගැට ගැසුවේද නැත,
කුරුමිණි සතුන් 
ගිනි පෙට්ටි වල
සිර කලේද නැත.
ඔහු ළමාවිය පසු කළේය
වැඩිහිටියෙක් වූ පසු
මේ සියල්ල ඔහුට විඳින්නට සිදුවිය.
මරණාසන්න වූ විට 
මෙසේ ඉල්ලීමක් කළේය ඔහු:
කියවන්න කවියක් 
හිරු ගැන 
මහා සාගරය ගැන 
නියුක්ලියර් රියක්ටරයක් ගැන
චන්ද්රිකා ගැන 
දැවැන්ත වූ මනුස්සකම් ගැන.

Leaf-people
that’s what we are:
come in different sizes
shapes and color
edges sharp and blunt
textures rough and tender;
Rock people
that’s what we are
in size and shape
accessible and aloof
smooth and slippery
visible and hidden.

Withering

Birth to death and beyond
traceable in form-movement
the gathering of lines
shedding of leaves
the undressing of frill
nudities un-anticipated
which nevertheless arrive,
encroch and evict,
and yet in this divestment
there’s accumulation
knowing and appreciation
and karmic collection
in a differently paced withering.
